Manito Education Centers 

Program Overview
Manito’s Education Centers provide a non-residential, community-based alternative for adolescents displaying behavior problems. Manito provides an integrated program of intensive therapeutic services combined with alternative education to include a holistic approach in addressing behavior problems.

Our centers follow a traditional school calendar and day. Manito is also an approved private provider of Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth Programs by the PA Department of Education.

Program Highlights

  • Earning traditional academic credit, individualized education programs in remediation skill development and GED preparation
  • Social skills curriculum in communications, conflict resolution, anger management, drug and alcohol education, and understanding cognitive distortions
  • Life skills curriculum that teaches independent living, employability skills, and understanding individual responsibilities of citizens
  • Individual and group counseling and individualized treatment plans for all clients
  • Community service work
  • Adventure based activities including the Alpine Tower
  • Vocational and cultural field trips
  • Daily transportation to and from the program

PA-Act 48 Criteria for Placement in Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth Programs
The school based Alternative Education Services Program provides education for students in grades 7 through 12 who exhibit to a marked degree any or all of the following conditions:

  • Disregard for school authority, including persistent violation of school policy and rules
  • Display of or use of controlled substances on school property or during school affiliated activities
  • Possession of a weapon on school property, as defined under 18 Pa. C.S, Section 921 (relating to possession of weapon on school property
  • Violent or threatening behavior on school property or during school-affiliated activities
  • Transition program for students returning from out of school placements
  • Commission of a criminal act or expulsion under school policy
  • Habitual truancy
  • Misconduct meriting suspension or expulsion

  • Mental Health SystemsYouth are accepted into Manito who are between the ages of 12 and 18. Most referrals to the program are experiencing behavioral, social, family or educational problems.

Social Skills & Counseling 
Instruction on pro-social skills is a core component of the program at Manito.  We work towards skills mastery in communications, conflict resolution, problem solving and anger management. Adventure based activities are used to enhance self-concept, team development skills, cooperation, and trust.
Individual counseling is available to all students at Manito. Trained counselors assist students to improve self awareness and self understanding, set goals, explore new positive behaviors, and develop problem solving and decision making skills.

Family Therapy and Drug and Alcohol Counseling Services provided by Masters level therapists may also be available.
